CHAPTER 7
That evening as I sat with my parents at the dinner table, I couldnât keep my thoughts away from the river. The scent of the water and the bank, the feel of the quilt, the goose bumps on my arms when his lips met mine. His breath, his groan, my undoing. It had been both easy and terrifying to allow that kind of vulnerability between us. And then all of that coming undone when he pulled away, his face aghast, his temperament returning to a cold neutrality that I had learned to loathe. He had stopped things. He hadnât wanted this. He had more important things to deal with. And I had to accept that.
In the morning, after my lesson, Kass was waiting for me as usual. He didnât offer his normal smile, though. He avoided looking at me at all.
âHey,â I halfway smiled. He didnât blink. I cleared my throat and attempted to muster up an apology that I had spent half the night fretting over. âI am sorry about yesterday, I shouldnât haveââ
âWhat was your lesson for today?â he interrupted. A group of girls passed by. They all watched him with wide eyes. A few offered whispers with hands up to their mouths, they giggled profusely together. There was a twist to my stomach as I watched him watch them watch him. He offered a wicked smile as they studied him, offering a cheeky wink as they passed. They all dissolved into uncontrollable giggling, but to my relief, disappeared around the corner. Something mean and nasty welled up inside of me, something I couldnât put my finger on.
âEvents leading to the uprising, the beginning of the war in the Old World,â I breathed out through gritted teeth. His eyes lazily came back around, he sighed as if bored.
âFine, come on then.â
Frustrated, I followed after him as he took steady strides towards the far wall of Athea. I wanted to tease him like normal, to trade thoughts on the books I was reading, to do something resembling our normal bantering. However, Kassâs eyes were locked forward. He didnât look at me, gave no inkling of emotion of any kind as we walked. If I thought heâd been guarded before, it was nothing in comparison to this. I was eager to break through the quiet, as it was not the easy silence that normally accompanied us. This was an uncomfortable stillness, sharp and purposeful. I couldnât find anything solid enough to say as we reached the wall, passed through, and made it to the trapdoor. All I could think about was how I wanted to talk to him about the river, about his lips on mine, about his reactionâ¦but I brought up none of that.
Taz was waiting outside of the door, his arms crossed over his chest, staring us down as we approached.
âHey, Taz.â I tried to smile cordially. He ignored me.
âMeeting in Pakâs office,â he said gruffly to Kass. Kass rolled his eyes and moved past him, sliding down the ladder and into the tunnel.
